Homework

* Look inside your child's homework folder.
This is in addition to the blue Wednesday folder.

Homework can provide valuable practice that supports learning. It should not cause anxiety and stress. Homework is not graded, but it is checked for completion. Assignments are given each school night except on Friday. Occasionally a family project might include a weekend. Most 2nd graders take 20-30 minutes to complete homework assignments. If your child is struggling with this timeframe, please contact me. I encourage families to establish a homework routine with a designated time and place. The use of a timer can help keep children focused.

Homework will be sent home daily in a designated folder. This folder might also include any unfinished classwork or items that need to be signed by parents. This folder is also a great communication tool for sending in notes or other school correspondence.

1) Read 15 minutes - Students may choose any reading selection of interest. Then they should read to self or someone else. It is acceptable for adults or older siblings to read to 2nd graders for part of this time. However, the goal is to build their stamina to reading independently for 15 minutes. Rereading the same text is very helpful and builds fluency. On Friday, students will share their reading selections with the class. In the beginning of the year, our sharing will be orally. Later, children will draw, write, and respond to text in various ways.

2) Math - Students will have a practice sheet, math cards, or game to review classroom instruction.
